One day they will write books about Jordan Spieth's nerveless brilliance at the 79th Masters. They're already rewriting the one comprising the tournament's records.

At an enthralled Augusta National, the 21 year old Texan's exquisite mastery and immaculate composure continued right to the end. We all know the cliché about how the Masters starts on the back nine on Sunday.

Well, this one ended on the 10th when this peerless putter rapped knuckles with his caddie as one more birdie found the bottom of the hole. It stretched his lead to six shots and, after taking everything the best players in the game could throw at him during the week and having repelled it all, there was no way he was going to throw it away now.

There might have been plenty of scary holes ahead but not much left to frighten Spieth given such a reassuring advantage.
That was his 26th birdie and one more Masters record for the man who became the youngest first-round leader on Thursday, set a new 36-hole record on Friday and a new low third round mark on Saturday.

On it went, this relentless pursuit of history, with landmarks reached at every turn. At the par-five 15th yet another birdie meant he reached 19 under par, the first man in Masters history to attain that total.

Just look who he had left behind. Just four players ever reached 17 under – Jack Nicklaus, Ray Floyd, Spieth and Tiger Woods. Only Spieth and Tiger ever got to 18. And now Spieth stands alone.
A bogey at the last didn't matter, and was fitting in its way. It means he shares the 72-hole tournament record set by 21-year-old Tiger in 1997.

YOUNGEST MASTERS WINNERS

Tiger Woods (1997) - 21 yrs, 3 mths, 14 days

Jordan Spieth (2015) - 21 yrs 8 mths 16 days
Seve Ballesteros (1980) - 23 yrs, 4 days
Jack Nicklaus (1963) - 23 yrs, 2 mths, 17 day

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy were paired together for the final day at Augusta, but neither could mount a challenge

'This is a momentous week in the history of our game,' said Sir Nick Faldo, summing it up perfectly on American television. 'Along with Rory McIlroy, he is going to carry our game for the next decade and what an exciting time it promises to be.'

Spieth shot a final round 70 and a magical 18 under par total of 270 to win by four from Phil Mickelson and game Englishman Justin Rose, whose sizeable consolation must be they played well enough to have won the Masters in 74 out of the 79 years.

Rounding out an illustrious top four was world No 1 McIlroy, who did his level best to repair the damage of a tentative opening 27 holes by shooting 31 for the back nine on Friday and following it with scores of 68 and 66 over the weekend.

'If someone had offered me 12 under at the start of the week I would have probably taken it,' he said. 'But Jordan just kept his foot to the metal. What he's done is awfully impressive.'

The last man to shake Spieth's hand before he set out on his fabulous quest was the 1976 winner Floyd, who just happened to be the last man to claim the green jacket while leading outright after every round.
Both men, of course, were hoping this would prove an act of symbolism and that is exactly how it unfolded. That display proved the highpoint of Floyd's career, as he outclassed Ben Crenshaw and Jack Nicklaus to win by eight shots. Now Spieth has written his own blueprint, one that will make a poster for every teenage wannabe who believes the ultimate dream - as Spieth declared himself to a television camera when he was just 14 - is to win the Masters.

'I've always wondered what it would feel like and right now it might even have exceeded my expectations,' said Spieth. 'I'm looking forward to being introduced everywhere as the Masters champion. I know that carries a heavy weight but it will make me feel so proud.'

Spieth proudly stands with yet another golf trophy during his younger years
