United States of America Top 7 Coldest Cities in March for Upper Midwest, Great Lakes, Northern New England

With about five days left in the month, several cities in the Upper Midwest, Great Lakes and northern New England are flirting with a top 7 coldest March. It's a huge turnaround from two years ago in March 2012 when many of these same cities saw their warmest March on record.

For each location below, we have provided where this month currently ranks among the coldest Marches on record and the projected final ranking based on the forecast.

We also show the monthly average temperature so far in March 2014 compared to the record warmth in March 2012. In some cases, you'd have to more than double the average monthly temperature so far in March 2014 to equal the warmth that we saw two years ago!

Keep in mind these rankings will change and won't be final until the end of March 31.

Green Bay, Wis.
•Current ranking: 3rd coldest March through March 26
•Forecast: Final ranking expected to be in the top 10
•March 2014 average temperature: 20.2 degrees
•March 2012 average temperature: 46.3 degrees (warmest March on record)

Detroit, Mich.
•Current ranking: 5th coldest March through March 26
•Forecast: Final ranking expected to be near the top 10
•March 2014 average temperature: 26.4 degrees
•March 2012 average temperature: 50.7 degrees (warmest March on record)

Buffalo, N.Y.
•Current ranking: 4th coldest March through March 26
•Forecast: Final ranking expected to be near the top 10
•March 2014 average temperature: 24.9 degrees
•March 2012 average temperature: 47.4 degrees (warmest March on record)

Burlington, Vt.
•Current ranking: Coldest March on record through March 26
•Forecast: Final ranking expected to be in the top 10
•March 2014 average temperature: 20 degrees
•March 2012 average temperature: 43.2 degrees (warmest March on record)

Caribou, Maine
•Current ranking: Coldest March on record through March 26
•Forecast: Final ranking expected to be in the top 10
•March 2014 average temperature: 12.8 degrees
•March 2012 average temperature: 31.5 degrees (5th warmest March on record)

International Falls, Minn.
•Current ranking: 2nd coldest March through March 26
•Forecast: Final ranking expected to be in the top 10
•March 2014 average temperature: 11 degrees​
•March 2012 average temperature: 38.2 degrees (warmest March on record)​

Chicago
•Current ranking: 5th coldest March through March 26
•Forecast: Final ranking expected to be out of the top 10
•March 2014 average temperature: 29.3 degrees
•March 2012 average temperature: 53.5 degrees (warmest March on record)
