Default Re: PHOTOs-Typhoon Bopha Hits the Philippines/Maps + Updates

Super Typhoon Bopha, packing maximum sustained winds of 160 mph, made landfall in the southern Philippines on Tuesday.

Bopha, the equivalent of a category-five hurricane, grazed the southern islands of the Republic of Palau late Sunday night local time, producing wind gusts up to 70 mph at the National Weather Service office in Koror, Palau. Approximately 21,000 live in the Republic of Palau, a group of roughly 300 islands east of the Philippines.

According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, Bopha's powerful, but rather small hurricane wind field (only somewhat larger than 2004's Hurricane Charley) made landfall in Mindanao Island Tuesday, local time. Bopha will then continue west-northwestward through the central Philippines. Mindanao is the second largest and easternmost island in the Philippines.
As of the latest forecast, the center of Bopha is expected to remain well south of Manila early Thursday morning, local time, however, some peripheral rain and wind are possible in the Philippine capital.

While both the Atlantic and eastern Pacific hurricane seasons have wound to a close, typhoons can form in the western North Pacific basin any time of year. In 2012, the year's first typhoon ("Pakhar") formed at the end of March. A 2010 tropical depression formed off the Vietnamese coast in late January.
That said, the majority of typhoons form from July through November.
What makes Bopha unique is its southern track and intensity. This will be the strongest typhoon to track through the southern Philippines in 22 years, the last of which to do so was Super Typhoon Mike (Philippine name "Ruping") in Nov. 1990.

Dating to 1945, there have been only 4 other typhoons that have tracked within 200 nautical miles of Davao, Philippines (on Mindanao Island) with an intensity of at least a category-five storm, including Mike ("Ruping") above:
  • Mike "Ruping" (1990)
  • Ike "Nitang" (1984)
  • Kate "Titang" (1970)
  • Louise:Marge "Ining" (1964)
Only "Ruping" and "Ining" were the equivalent of category-five storms.
Speaking of Bopha's southerly location, according to Weather Underground Director of Meteorology, Dr. Jeff Masters, Bopha first became a typhoon at a mere 3.8 degrees north latitude early on November 30 (U.S.), becoming the most southerly typhoon on record in the western North Pacific basin (or, closest to the equator). The old record was Typhoon Kate in October 1970.

Bopha just missed being the closest to equator category-five equivalent typhoon on record in the western North Pacific Basin (or any other basin, for that matter), reaching that intensity at 7.4 degrees north latitude Monday morning (U.S. time). Only Typhoon Louise in 1964, becoming a category-five equivalent typhoon at 7.3 degrees north latitude was closer to the equator.
A more typical typhoon track would be either toward the northern Philippine island of Luzon, then curling northwest, north, or northeast toward southeast China, Taiwan, or Japan.
