The Mayan Calender was just that, a long term calender. So what is common about calenders? They all have a start and an ending. Maybe what is forgotten in this, is that every one that ends, has a new one coming out to replace it...only that is no longer possible with the Mayans. That culture/civilization no longer exists as it was. The knowledge it once had was destroyed by the Jesuits and Spanish explorers. There is no one to calculate the next long term calender that picks up where this one ends.

The rotation has been known in the orbit and path of the earth through the milky way. Roughly once every 5000 some years, we pass through the plane of the Milky Way Galaxy. Only you must remember... it's more of a designated area, not something like a wall that is absolute and fixed. Nor is that plane known to be densely populated with other material. So it's more of a haphazard hit or miss with chances being strongly on the miss side. Space is unimaginably vast beyond measurement and counting. The mass within that vastness is near nothing. We are fooling ourselves if we don't recognize that more times than not, nothing happens in those 5000 year spans and the event happens unnoticed.
