Default Re: Wil Wheaton Defends BitTorrent, Warns for Anti-Piracy Lobby

There have been quite a few studies that have said that piracy has no effect on sales. That if anything, it is the music lovers that share, giving others a chance to hear what they would not normally hear, that drive much of the sales for the music industry.

I've mentioned this before but in France, Hodopi was put into effect which is their version of 3 strikes and you're off the internet. After a year of it being in effect, no one has yet been thrown off the net there. But it is coming up this year.

The IFPI who pushed for and cheerleaded the effort, claimed that it was a resounding success. Only, if it was a success and the pirates were thieving without paying, why didn't the sales of music go up? Fact is it didn't.

There are a lot of studies that have been done, claiming that piracy has next to nothing to do with the profit line of big music. Read about those studies here:

Where Drew Wilson goes back over old studies that were ignored, reviewing them for what they did say and the public never heard about because it wasn't in the interests of big music. Be prepared for a long read if you are interested, he's now up to part 16 on the topic.
