GIMP is a photoeditor. It was originally for Linux only. It became popular enough that they had to port it to both Windows and to Mac. It's the open software equivalent of Photoshop. Almost every image I do of any sort goes through GIMP at some point. Those you see as my avatar and sig are no exception as they were resized in it and the text added in the signature with it.
