This has been going on a long time. The funny thing is something you don't know. Other than the open source software encryption, all commercial encryption programs already have this back door in them. Microsoft has a built in backdoor and from their site all that law enforcement has to do to gain access is send them a letter with the department logo and an explanation they are working on a case that requires this specific access plus showing the court has so ordered the access. They are then granted the key to get into the software without passwords or normal checks.
With the present day neo-cons in politics, this trend will continue until they are shown that it is no longer acceptable by the public at large. Lord knows when enough will be enough as it is akin to the live frog in the skillet.
