Gov't seeks more than 1,700 secret warrants

The Justice Department made 1,745 requests to a secret court for authority to wiretap or search for evidence in terrorism and espionage investigations last year.

That's according to an April 30 letter from the department to the Senate that was first reported Thursday by the Federation of American Scientists.

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which meets in secret to hear classified evidence from government attorneys, did not reject any of the requests, though judges did require modifications to 30 requests.

It was an increase over 2010, when the department made 1,579 requests.

The FBI also made 16,511 national security letter requests for information regarding 7,201 people last year. The letters allow officials to collect virtually unlimited kinds of sensitive, private information like financial and phone records.

That is down from 2010, when 24,287 requests for information regarding 14,212 people were made.

Does anyone not see there is a problem here? Our government has went absolutely bat crap crazy. Information regarding 7201 people in 2010? I doubt there are that many terrorists in Pakistan or Yemen for that matter. Yet they are somehow going to find that many here? You as well as I know this is much more than overkill. This is taking advantage of the circumstances.

Why does it not surprise me that the FBI is involved? 16,511 NSA letters for 14,212 people? Assume they are different people that's 21,000 people rounded out. Sorry, even as many as 50 people I might be convinced in a stretch might possibly be terrorists out of the whole US population and honestly I think that highly unlikely but 21,000 people is an agency run amock.

Even the NYT newspaper is now calling the FBI a fake when it comes to discovering terrorist plots. Those plots, are the FBI itself manufacturing the threat, putting up gullible or worse people into situations that could be stretched to be called terrorist related but it has been noted time and again that these fall closer to victims than terrorists. With out the aid of the FBI, none of these people would have had the means, the support, encouragement, the equipment, the explosives, nor the plan. At all steps it appears the FBI created each part of the plan, supplied the fake bomb or explosive, what to do and where, the support network, the encouragement, and the wherewithall to set someone up. Sorry I have a big problem with entrapment and that is exactly what all these terrorists busts appear to be.

I can not help but think more and more that we are in the early stages of prewar Germany. That's not what this country was ever about.
