I very much agree with this assessment. When you asked for what is the best, be it firewall, A/V, or software, you come down to a popularity contest.

I fell out with Norton a long time ago. Back in the days when Norton was actually running the software line, you often found that Norton exceeded your expectations, making it one dang good batch of software. Those were the days of DOS, when memory management and retrieval of files was considerably harder.

Symantic bought out Norton to be a cash cow. Typically with large corporate atmosphere, they don't really know how to handle the temperamental but outstanding programmers. It usually follows shortly that those who made the programs outstanding go too. What is left is programmers for a wage, rarely above competent level programming and the results reflect that. When was the last time a software package of any sort exceeded your expectations?

There is a reason why Norton is hard to get out of the system. It's the same reason why techs used to tell computer users to reinstall windows to get rid of AOL. Datamining is lucritave. It can only happen provided they have a connection to your computer and that is the reason most of this is so hard to uninstall. Symantic is getting an income even off free users.
