Default Re: Firewalls

You could try Comodo, a free firewall. It's a fairly good one for a software firewall. It's one with a decent amount of control. Search for it in the search engine and you'll find the home page of it right off.

You should keep in mind though, software firewalls are pretty much bells and whistles. All software firewalls are subject to hacking. Maybe the worse software firewall is the one provided by Microsoft as part of Windows. If a hacker can't get past that one, he's not much of a hacker.

The better firewall is a hardware one. You usually can't infect it with a hack, though there are exceptions. Normally you get that with a router. The problem with a hardware firewall is, no warnings other than going in to look at the log daily. If someone is probing your connection you won't be told unless you go look. This is why software firewalls help some.

There's another issue people don't usually know to ask about. Firewalls are normally one direction blockage, unlike what you would assume. They'll either block incoming or outgoing, rarely both. This is true of both hardware and software. Normally hardwares block out going. Microsoft in it's wisdom decided to set up its software firewall the same way. The majority of softwares block incoming.

Hope this helps you some.
