Child sacrifice is disturbingly rife in modern day Uganda, where children are murdered as part of ceremonial rituals. We join a survivor and undercover team fighting to bring a witch doctor to justice.
Child sacrifice might sound like an ancient ritual, but for many Ugandans it’s a terrifying, modern crime. "We have a society that believes in withcraft, including the Christians who go to church", says Judge Margaret Mutonyi. "They consult with witch doctors", she says.
Concerns about the phenomenon emerged around a decade ago, following an economic boom and rapid social change in Uganda. Some believe that witch doctors saw an easy route to riches, using the cover of traditional medicine to extract money from the greedy and gullible.
"They mutilate children and use their blood, tissue or any body organs with the belief that when you use those body parts in witchcraft rituals you get wealth, you get protection, you get some form of blessing", says accountant-turned-aid worker, Peter Sewakiryanga.
As well as caring for survivors, his organisation investigates up to 25 cases of child sacrifice each year.
We join him on the hunt for Kivumbi Awali, who gained notoriety 8 years ago when he was filmed offering to bury a child alive.
As a six-year-old, Allan Ssembatya survived an attack by Awali. Will his decade without justice come to an end?
