A giant sunfish found washed up on a river's beach was so massive, the people who discovered it mistook it for a piece of a shipwreck
Linette Grzelak posted a picture of the dead sunfish found by a fishing crew at the mouth of the Murray River over the weekend in South Australia.

She told the Guardian Australia of the incredible find: “My partner was out with his work crew and he thought it was a piece of shipwreck at first."

Odd-looking sunfish are among the world's largest ocean-dwellers

They are distinctive for having no true tail and for their habit of swimming on their sides, in the deepest of any oceans

The sunfish so big the locals who found it thought it was a piece of shipwreck at first

The fish discovered in Australia along the waters of the Coorong National Park was so big, Ms Grzelak posted that she thought it wasn't real.
"I thought it was fake," she wrote

The find was identified by Australian experts as an Ocean sunfish called Mola mola and estimated to be about 1.8 metres long,

It is the rarest of the species to be found in Australian waters and tends to be found swimming along country's southern and western coasts.
They can dive to the depths of the ocean.

Sun fish are often taller than they are long

"These huge beauties are the world's largest bony fish and can weigh more than a car," National Parks Australia said
.

According to the Australian Museum, there are four species of the massive sunfish.
The "unusual looking" adults are distinctively shaped, as they lack a true tail.

The Ocean sunfish is often as tall as it is long, and when they swim near the surface their tall dorsal fin can see them mistaken them for sharks.

They enjoy jellyfish and occasionally small crustaceans and other fish, according to the Australian Museum.

Tales of the giant sunfish affecting ships in Australian waters date back over a century.

In 1998 a sunfish weighing 1.4 tonnes was found stuck to the bow of a cement-carrying ship docked in Sydney.

And just last year, a yacht had to withdraw from the Rolex Sydney Hobart boat race after it hit a sunfish and broke its rudder.
