Black 47 Sets Huge Box Office Record in Ireland
New Film Black 47 now The Top-Grossing Film of 2018 in Ireland
Irish Central, 19 Sep 2018.
On Wednesday, 19September, the new Irish Famine drama Black 47 crossed the 1 million mark at Irish box offices, making it the highest grossing Irish film for 2018.
Black 47 is now the first Irish film to gross 1 million in Irish box offices since 2016s Irish comedy The Young Offenders.
Having crossed the 1 million threshold, Black 47 now joins the ranks of other hugely popular Irish films The Wind that Shakes the Barley, The Guard, and Michael Collins.
Black 47 has also enjoyed the highest grossing opening weekend for an Irish film since 2015s Brooklyn, which stars Irish actress Saoirse Ronan.
Macdara Kelleher, producer for Black 47, said "We are delighted that Irish audiences have responded to the film and are supporting it in such overwhelming numbers.
It's a great achievement for any film to cross the 1 million mark and take its place alongside films like Michael Collins and Brooklyn."
Black 47 is now heading into its third week in Irish theaters. Later this month, it will be released in both the UK and the US.
The film is set in 1847 Ireland during the height of the Great Famine. It stars Hugo Weaving, Jim Broadbent, and Stephen Rea alongside James Frecheville, Freddie Fox and Barry Keoghan.
