Massive Winter Storm Looms with Freezing Rain, 100km/h Winds and Huge Snow Dumps - But Sydney is in for ANOTHER Spring-Like Weekend as Melbourne Shivers Through the Coldest Weather in a Century

  • Australia's turbulent winter weather is set to continue with strong gale warnings
  • Victoria set to cop the brunt of blistering storms stretching over the weekend
  • As well as torrential rain and gale-force winds, record snow levels due to fall
  • Experts warn residents to secure property for predicted gales up to 100km/h
Daily Mail Australia, 8 August 2017.

Australia's temperamental winter weather is set to continue with torrential storms set to sweep right across the nation's south east.

Victoria will cop the brunt of the blistering storm as strong wind warnings have been issued tonight for Port Philip, West Coast and Central Coast.
Melbourne can expect torrential downpours over the weekend, with thunderstorms a strong possibility.

Rain is pretty much a guarantee for Adelaide and Melbourne, with Hobart and Perth also potentially hit by storms

Australia's south coastline is set to be battered by blustering winds as residents are warned to prepare themselves for strong gales over the weekend

There will be no respite moving into Saturday as south east Australia braces itself for gale-force winds that has left experts warning Victorians to secure their property.

There are also freezing conditions predicted in Alpine areas, with record snow levels set to batter the state's north east with winds topping 100km/h.

The Victorian Alps and New South Wales Alps are set to receive the worst snowfall of the year with between 50cm to 90cm due over the weekend,' Weatherzone meteorologist Tom Hough told Daily Mail Australia.

'There is a 30 per cent chance of thunderstorms in Melbourne over the weekend, and with it will come gales of around 90km/h,' he added.

Temperatures will once again plummet below freezing in Canberra while Perth will struggle through a cold weekend

Torrential rain is expected in Melbourne, accompanied by gale force winds up to 100km/h.

It comes after Melbourne struggled through it's coldest day since 1970, as a record low 8.9C was recorded in the city's CBD.

Neighbouring states South Australia and New South Wales will also be hit badly, feeling the effects of a polar low moving north from the Southern Ocean towards western Bass Strait.

Adelaide, as well as the South Australian coastline, have been warned to brace itself for similar conditions predicted for Victoria.

New South Wales can expect to receive the tail end of the harsh winter conditions sweeping the south.

Canberra will also continue its streak of plummeting temperatures, peaking at a minimum of -5C on Wednesday

Things aren't much better for Perth who will endure a miserable weekend with a maximum temperature of 4C as an unpredictable Australian winter continues.

Mount Hotham in the Victorian Alps could see its heaviest snow fall of the year with between 50 and 90cm set to fall over the next few days

Winds of around 70km/h are expected as a minimum but some areas could hit up to 100km/h
